Setting

katey vitale

A rooster crows into the morning sky

Chicks chirp waiting on fresh food

The dog paws at the blanket trying to get under it

To escape the morning chill even though its spring

Alarms blare saying time to get up over and over

Eggs sizzle on the frying pan

The bacon pops as the pan gets hotter

Biscuits bake in the hot oven

As the heat pushed at the unbaked dough

The sounds of arguments drift down the hallway,

Kids fighting over something as trivial as taking the first shower

Front door bangs opens as the dog’s collar clinks against the metal hook

Of the leash

Plates slid together as they were put in the sink

The morning is over and now it’s time.

The Dog yawned as the door opened

To a soft morning breeze

One paw in front of another

To a soft morning breeze

The dog reached the backyard

To do what every living thing does

Chickens fed dog walked and now it’s time to go

Part Two

The door slammed closed as the family left

The dog ran window to window

Wondering why?

Why did they leave me?

Why didn't they stay with me

The dog noses his bowl

Finding no interest in the food or water

He lays his head on his paws and lets out a whine

All the while wondering

Why?

Part Three

The beeping of the buses

The screaming of the kids yelling bye

See you tomorrow !

A head looks through the window

The curtain rustles as he moved

Tail wagging tongue hanging out

The turning of the lock

Brings out a bark in the dog

Sunlight pours through the open

Crack from the doorway

Finally after what seemed liked forever they

Come in , half of the family here

Homework is laid out

Snacks and drinks are open

The sun continues it’s journey across the sky

As the chickens are fed and ovens turned on

How was your day? asked as answers drifted around the room

Dinner was eaten and teeth were brushed

The dog curled under a blanket and sighed contently

Everybody was home.
